DIRTY SAND

Products made
from incinerated
household
waste

of bottom ash
is produced by
one person
each year.

Incineration of household waste is applied worldwide. The waste is burned in an incinerator at about 1000 degrees Celcius. In the Netherlands, the heat of the incineration plant is used to generate power. However, the method of incineration produces a new waste stream, a leftover residue that remains on the bottom of the incineration plant. This residue is called bottom ash. The supply of bottom ash continues to increase every day because there aren’t many practical applications yet, and so the value of the bottom ash residue is balanced against the transportation costs. With this project, we aim to show the potential of this leftover residue generated from the incineration of household waste, by converting bottom ash into a new glass-like material, and its property to be recycled over and over again.

Interior tiles

The series includes two different tiles from two different materials. DS glass is made from 80% bottom ash. DS porcelain contains 35% bottom ash.

bottom ash   0.0 > 2.0mm
We only use the smallest fraction of bottom ash. This is the most useless fraction because it is too small for big scale applications like concrete production. This fraction is also too complicated to sort out and so there needs to be paid for desposal.
